The RST is a certificate of competency for people in charge of recreational vessels in Western Australia with motors greater than 6hp.
The RST is a qualification based on the National Marine Safety Committee's (NMSC) Guidelines for Recreational Boat Operator Competencies.
When do the regulations come into effect?
If you are aged between 14 and 25 you must obtain an RST before 1 April 2007.
If you are over 25 you will have until 1 April 2008 before you are required to hold an RST.
Your RST is like a driver's license in that it is recognised throughout Australia. If you are travelling to other states, check with the local marine authority to ensure you meet all of their requirements.
How can I prepare myself for the assessments?
Obtain a copy of the RST workbook from Skipper's School or download a copy here. Read all sections, answer the practice questions and look at the practical assessment tasks. If you are not confident in attempting without training then Skippers II or Skippers III will provide you with the knowledge and skill to gain your RST. See our training options for more information.
Do I have to do a training course?
No, not necessarily! Contact Skipper's School to discuss your individual needs and we'll help you determine if you will benefit from one of our training programs.
What happens if I don't get an RST?
Those who do not acquire an RST are subject to a fine starting at $200 and penalties will be registered with the Fines Enforcement Registry. You must produce your RST upon request, so always have it with you on your vessel.
I should be exempt from assessment but I haven't received a letter...
Phone the Department of Planning and Infrastructure RST Hotline on (08) 9216 8966.
How can I pay?
All payments are strictly cash unless otherwise arranged.
What happens if I don't pass the assessment?
If you are having trouble passing either the theory or practical assessment, we at Skipper's School will work closely with you to assist you as much as we can. Our policy is to enable you to PAY WHEN YOU PASS. This means that you may sit either the theory or practical assessments as many times as you need. We believe our training skills are such that you will probably pass first time anyway!
What do I need to bring?
Once you have completed the booking form, a confirmation and information letter will be sent to you.
